IMechE Yorkshire Regional Meet Up

This week the team attended the IMechE Yorkshire Regional meet up, where all the teams from Yorkshire are invited to present their ideas and projects they have been working on. This year we presented some of our design choices as well how we have been trying to develop the team for the future. It was great to see the different design choices and philosophies being applied to the competition. We look forward to seeing the teams on track later this year.

Partnering with Ansys

Ansys’ products have been a cornerstone for success at SHU Racing. The team has used Ansys Workbench for many projects such as the development of our first carbon fibre monocoque, full underfloor aero-package as well as more essential parts such as the brake discs and rear differential mounts. Having access to the software package has massively accelerated the technical development of the team and we are proud to now call them partners.

Building the Foundations for Success

This year our Project Manager has been looking at better ways we can manage and develop the team from the ground up. With aid from the other team members, Finn has been leading Computational Fluid Dynamics tutorial sessions to help develop one of the more challenging skills to learn. The fluid dynamics of the car is integral for the cars success, proper design ensures airflow is properly directed to radiators to cool the engine, does not block airflow to the air intake and ensures our aerodynamic features provide usable and suitable performance for our car.

While this is an advanced topic to teach, the framework being created will be scrutinised and adapted for different skills that team wishes to teach in the future. The overall aim is to improve the knowledge transfer in the team and allow team members to get involved with complex design earlier than ever before.

Meet The Team

Meet the team is an opportunity for us to give you a chance to learn a little more about the people who make up SHU Racing. This week, we welcome Sam Duego. Sam has been a key part of the team this season, providing mechanical assistance to the powertrain and help build the wiring loom, while also taking on CAD projects to further his engineering capabilities.
