SHU Racing 2019 Roundup

As the Christmas break draws 2019 to a close, we look back on what a fantastic year 2019 has been for SHU Racing and what we have achieved, from our best ever finish at Formula Student UK to meeting HRH Prince Harry. The team can finally take a well earned rest over the festive period, before returning in January as we start manufacturing our 2020 car.

Silverstone

Silverstone 2019 was the teams most successful event to date as straight from the off we were able to hit new milestones never achieved before. SHU Racing was one of the first teams to make it through scrutineering ensuring we had plenty of testing time before the dynamic events commenced on Saturday. Even with some mechanical setbacks, SHU Racing was one of just 14 teams who were able to complete all the weekends events, including the 22 Km endurance. Along with the success out on track, the team was also able to reach the costing final in the teams history, finishing 6th overall scoring 96 points out of a possible 100.

The culmination of hard work from everyone involved with the car resulted in the team placing 21st of 81 teams at the event, and we hope to once again emulate this success at FS UK 2020.

A Royal Visit

Shortly after returning from a Silverstone, the team were given the privilege to present SHU Racing 2020 to HRH The Duke of Sussex, KCVO - Prince Harry - and Sheffield Hallam University Vice Chancellor, Sir Chris Husbands. During his visit HRH took the time to talk to each of the team members present and to find out about their backgrounds as well as discussing how Formula Student is of benefit to us as Engineers.

We would like to thank HRH Prince Harry once again for the time he spent talking to the team and for expressing his interest both in the STEM field and the Formula Student project.

SHU Racing 2020

As the season started once again, as did SHU Racing recruitment drive, with more students than ever wanting to become involved with formula student it has been a busy time for the team as develop our most advanced car to date.

In order to prepare for the upcoming manufacture of the car, our new members have been enrolled on a six week intensive course to provide them with the necessary skills in order to produce the majority of parts in house as manufacturing begins in the new year. The team have also been busy with the 2019 car as they headed off down to Bruntingthorpe airfield in Leicester to induct our new drivers whilst also giving our new managers a chance to see how the car runs and what potential improvements need to be made in order to make SHU Racing 2020 the most successful car in the teams history.

Even amongst all our activities, the team have been working hard to produce new designs with significant changes being made across the board. New for the 2020 season includes a redesigned Chassis and suspension setup with a greater focus on driveablility and handling whilst also optimising the powertrain to ensure we can get the most our of our single cylinder KTM. Keep an eye out for more updates in the new year!
