COUNTDOWN TO LAUNCH
Its all go at SHU Racing as the team prepare the car for its official launch in late June. The month is a busy one, with final report submissions in for the IMechE event, as well as a great deal of registrative tasks to be done. The 2019 car is in final build, ready for paint and initial construction in the coming weeks. As we head into this final stage of Formula Student, find out what the group have been up to as they finish the University year.
SHU Racing 2019 Launch
As a celebration of all the work done by the team over the previous 10 months, SHU Racing would like to invite its readers to this year's official SHU Racing 2019 Launch event, at Sheffield Hallam University. The event will be held in the Sheaf Building's Hertha Ayrton STEM Atrium, 2-5pm on Friday 28th June.
The reveal is a chance for the team to present their developments, both technically and within the team, as they get set to compete at Silverstone in July. A manager's presentation will be followed by the car's reveal and a Q&A session between everyone at the event.
If you would like to come to the afternoon event, please register at shuracing2019.eventbrite.co.uk. The event is free of charge and will include lite refreshments. Please direct any other queries to email@example.com.
SHU Masters in Engineering Conference
As a final parting assessment from Sheffield Hallam University, the 7 MEng Masters student who head the team presented their year's work to the rest of the Masters in Engineering year group. The day was sponsored by local firm, Tinsley Bridge, and included presentation from other IMechE lead projects such as the Unmanned Aerial Systems challenge.
Other projects included a research into Self Sensing Mortar (best technical paper), Wave energy harvesting (best presentation) and sustainable living for local homeless people, in association with the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) competition.
A big thank you to our 2019 teamwear sponsor, Workwear Express, for providing the brilliant business shirts the managers wore on the day. The business shirts will later be used in the various presentations at Silverstone, as the team enter the Dragon's Den-like business pitch scenarios.
Keep On Rolling On
A large milestone reached last week was the car's first contact with the ground (well tyres). Having assessed the ride height and clearances of all the suspension units, the car could be lowered down - very carefully - and put under it's own weight for the first time. Now, with all the wishbone geometry affirmed, the mounts could be seam welded and full fixed to the car, in time for the final few attachments to be added.
The use of T45 grade tubing in 2019 has permitted a much more aggressive mounting of the wishbones, due to its increased stiffness and ultimate strength when compared to previously used tubing. Adjustable lower wishbones too add a wider range of working, offering the greatest degree of freedom SHU Racings suspension has ever seen.
The next 3 weeks will be full of rapid developments as the team set their sites on dyno runs and initial shake downs ahead of the SHU Racing 2019 launch.
