Steering to Success

Sponsorship Spotlight

For the 2020 season, SHU Racing have once again been provided with Solidworks licences by Dassault Systems. Sheffield Hallam uses solidworks as its primary CAD modelling software, given its

class leading user interface and the variety of packages included which allows users to 3D model, simulate and present final parts using a wide variety of sophisticated packages including, but not limited to, Finitie Element Analysis, Topology studies and Rendering tools.

SHU Racing’s engineers can now utilise the software away from the usual facilities, allowing our team to edit, display and verify designs wherever they may be, whilst also practising and further improving their CAD abilities.

Our engineers are once again looking forward to making the most of the Solidworks system again when producing the 2020 car.

Department Development

For this season the steering wheel is undergoing a radical change for the first time since 2017. This year it will be a two-part shell to allow for increased driver comfort and increased manufacturability, as this allows for it to be 3D printed and then joined. One of the drives for this change is to utilise the in house facilities we have here at Sheffield Hallam using multiple additive manufacturing methods. An initial prototype of the steering wheel is now being produced and we cannot wait to see the final results!

Making some noise

The 2019 car was started  for the first time since Silverstone earlier last week, giving the new managers to chance to see how each of systems fair when our engine is running. In doing so its given our new members an insight into what design changes need to considered as part of the 2020 build. In the coming weeks we hope to take the car testing to initiate our new drivers and also collect new and invaluable data to help progress our new designs. We will be reporting back soon, so watch this space!

Welcoming back familiar faces

On the 23rd October Sheffield Hallam is holding its annual Alumni Event in the Hertha Ayrton Atrium for the Department of Engineering and Mathematics and Alumni Network featuring an alumni guest speaker; Paul Rawlinson, Managing Director of TBG solutions.

This is a chance for SHU Racing to connect with alumni of Sheffield Hallam University and engage with returning team members to hear about how their experiences of being apart of one of the university's most engaging teams helped them develop and progress into the professionals they are today.

The event will be held in the University's Hertha Atrium Stem Atrium, City Campus from 18:00 – 20:00. Tickets for the event are free and can be obtained from the link below.
