BODY MOVING, ECU SWITCHING AND YORKSHIRE FS MEET UP

In this week's update, we take a look at our hot off the (literal) press bodywork, a new ECU configuration and validation and a trip over to our compadriates at Hull University to take part in the Yorkshire Region Formula Student meet up. Read on to find out more as the team goes from strength to strength as we develop our 2019 vehicle!

A RIGID BODY TAKES SHAPE

Last week, our brand new body work was delivered by 4G Global Ltd. After entrusting the manufacture of the bodywork to 4G in the 2017/18 season, the team knew they would be in capable hands. Impressed by the quality and delivery times provided by the company, we tasked 4G Global Ltd. once again with turning our Solvay manufactured Carbon Fibre into a beautifully finished set of bodywork. After a number of compliments about the cars fit and finish Formula Student UK last year, our bodywork and aerodynamics manager, Adam Devonport, was very keen to once again capture the spotlight at this year's event.

The bodywork has been made using a Carbon pre-preg autoclave composite system, with the material provided by our sponsor Solvay. The bodywork, when combined with the new aerodynamic package, will ensure the car is functional while maintaining a great aesthetic appeal. SHU Racing would like to thank Guy and the team at 4G Global Ltd. for the brilliant components.

HEY, HO, ECU SET UP AND READY TO GO

The new ECU has been successfully integrated within the 2018 car, using last years car as a test bed for the electronics team to ensure the management system is set-up in advance of the 2019 being finished. The next stage for the ECU is to take the 2018 car to a rolling road to ensure an optimised map for the engine can be made.

With the help of DTA Fast, we'll be utilising the features of the S100 Pro to control the car's new solenoid gear shifter, flappy paddle gear box and newly rebuilt KTM 500 EXC engine. The simple UI of DTA's software will allow us to train our upcoming electrical team to become experts in modifying, running and maintaining the control systems within the car.

YORKSHIRE FORMULA STUDENT MEET UP

On Wednesday this week, SHU Racing had the opporunity to visit Hull University for the annual IMechE Yorkshire Formula Student meet up. Hosted by HUFS (Hull University Formula Student), the event was also attended by Sheffield Formula Racing (University of Sheffield), Team HARE (University of Huddersfield), SUN Racing (University of Sunderland), Leeds Formula Race Team (University of Leeds) and Bradford Formula Student Team (University of Bradford). The night was a chance to present the work being carried out by each team in the 2019 season, as well as showcase the 2018 cars.

SHU Racing also had chance to give a short presentation on the developments being made this season, and take questions from the audience. It was a great session and the attending teams learnt a large amount about how to build, manufacture and run a successful Formula Student team.

A huge thank you goes to our sponsors, without whom we wouldn't have been able to achieve what we have done so far.

We'd also like to thank the University of Hull for hosting the event and the hospitality the team received.
